Businesses leaning towards using freelancers: How can you benefit from this?

“The supreme accomplishment is to blur the line between work and play.” Arnold J. Toynbee

If you are sitting at home, working while watching Netflix, then you have definitely blurred this line. Freelancers get to basically turn their hobby into a job.

Small businesses are starting to realize that they can capitalize on the use of freelancers. From writers, to contractors, to makeup artists, freelancers usually run small businesses themselves, and therefore will hold the same business values, ethics and standards of quality as the business they’re freelancing for.

Paying a freelancer per job done is much cheaper than paying an employee a salary and benefits every month, and the quality of work is greatly increased when freelancers are chosen specific to a certain project or niche’. Even as a freelancer yourself, you can outsource certain jobs to other freelancers while to tackle a certain task.

Companies are becoming more and more interested in hiring freelancers, as opposed to full time employees, as it is more beneficial in terms of specialized talent, increased flexibility, and less overheads.

So how can you benefit from this growing business trend?

Opportunity to start your own business

People tend to think of businesses as traditional bricks and mortar, which is too expensive to start and the risks of failure and losing that investment is too high. However, in retrospect, starting a business is much easier than people think and there are endless online opportunities that people simply are not taking advantage of.

Understandably it is difficult to decipher where to begin. How would you even get your message out there?

Here’s what you can do to begin with:

1. Increase your technical knowledge

In the age of tech it is important to understand what technical tools you have available to you.

The easiest way to understand this is to actually do it. You can read about it till you’re blue in the face, but if you’re anything like me and barely technically inclined, the best thing to do is do it practically. Not only will you increase your technical skills, you will also have started your business without even realizing it!

You will be accomplishing 3 important steps at the same time:

  • Get started
  • Start learning
  • Start earning

2. Hone in on your skills

The most cost effective type of business to run is one that sells a service. Selling products are great too, however there are several different costs and responsibilities attached to that for example managing inventory, mitigating risks such as delivery and supplier issues etc.

When you’re selling a service, the costs are considerably lower, as you’re selling a skill and not a physical product.

If you want to reach a worldwide market selling a service, then consider services such as writing, affiliate marketing or consultation, providing advice to businesses and individuals in your area of your expertise before they begin a project.

3. Find a profitable niche’

This may seem daunting to some, however when you determine what you’re passionate about, the fog will start to clear and you’ll have a better understanding of what’s needed in the market.

For example, if you’re passionate about art or painting, and your research discovers that there is a market for specific genres of art in different markets, start writing blog posts or reviews about your favorite artworks or painters. Reach out to artists or galleries with your writing and propose to sell their artworks online on your own website!

Do not be discouraged if it seems as though there is no market for what you’re passionate about. It’s just a matter of thinking outside the box and coming up with ways to make your passionate more appealing to a certain market.

It’s all about perspective.

Protect yourself against job losses and economic disasters

What I witnesses in 2008 recession is something that I will never forget. People were not financially prepared for an economic collapse and were living way above their means.

When the recession hit, so many people lost their jobs and found themselves in a dark hole with no way out. And the consequences were so dire that I know people personally who are still recovering financially.

After I witnessed this, I understood the importance of not only preparing yourself financially, but also diversifying your income instead of your salary.

Here’s how entrepreneurs weather the storms and use it to their advantage:

1. Freelance your services online

In times of crisis, individuals and businesses are looking to find a way out of their calamity. Businesses will be looking to lower their costs and individuals will be looking to find ways of creating an income.

As a freelancer selling a service online to a worldwide market, this will be your opportunity to:

  • Adapt your message or service to what is needed in the market.
  • You can even create jobs by outsourcing certain tasks to other individuals, giving them the opportunity to freelance.

Regardless of the economic situation , you will always have the opportunity to reach an audience, and the good new is that you are not walking the tight rope of sudden changes leading to job loss.

You get to be a free thinking individual

There is something incredibly liberating about being able to think as an individual, stepping out of the Matrix and coming up with your own ideas without the risk of a boss not liking it and putting the spotlight on you for being too ‘out there’ or not producing ‘feasible’ ideas. And we all know what that negative spotlight can lead to.

It is astounding what ideas and concepts people generate when they don’t have the pressure of several eyes on them, followed by critique which could go anyway.

You will be able to use your passion to your advantage and never feel like you’re working again, since you’re doing what you love……from the comfort of your own home no doubt!

As a freelancer you get the chance to adapt your business to market needs without seeking approval or being traditional. Therefore there will always be earning potential and opportunities.

The ‘Freethinker’

The term ‘Freethinker’ first came to use in the 17th century, and yet in the 21st century people are still afraid to think in a way that is not steered by authority, society or tradition.

Here’s why ‘Freethinkers’ are most successful in business:

1. You are original

When you are not following someone else’s formula, you start producing original products and services.

And you can literally generate these ideas anywhere. From listening to conversations, to reading something interesting or just paying attention to your surroundings.

You are not bound by company culture, tradition or style of thinking.

Originality makes you much less susceptible to comparison, and much more appealing to an audience.

2. You understand The Human-to-Human factor

Traditional B2B and B2C marketing and advertising strategies are beginning to fade in the 21st century. Customers are becoming more sophisticated and knowledgeable and do not want to be seen as customers, but as humans.

An inherent trait of Freethinkers is that they appeal to the human side of customers, and therefore their language or message is more simple, interactive and conversational.

The temptation to manipulate and persuade using traditional sales and marketing techniques are eliminated and the customer can feel it in the style of communication.

People tend to gravitate towards someone or something they can trust. This is established through originality and authenticity, which cannot be manufactured or purchased, creating incredible advantage for the Freethinker.

Choosing the path of freelancer means that you have the freedom to live life on your own terms. You have the chance to do what you’re passionate about and not feel like you’ve worked a day in your life, while protecting yourself against any unexpected catastrophic life events. What could be better?

The world is your oyster.

So will it be your ‘day one’ or ‘one day’?
